“Atomic Baby” by Carol Kinne

Biography – A Short Version

Carol Kinne was born in Utica, NY on December 14, 1942, just 12 days after the first nuclear reaction had taken place in Chicago in a handball court under the University of Chicago. Thus her identity as “Atomic Baby” was formed. The cold war marked her formative years, ducking and covering in the school hallway, watching the skies during the Cuban crisis, and half expecting to get hit by an Atomic Bomb any minute.

Kinne attended schools in New Hartford, NY; Newtonville, NY; Mt Vernon, NY; and Bronxville, NY; graduating from Bronxvile Senior School in June 1960. She then went to Syracuse University, University of Buffalo, and Hunter College in NYC where she got selected to attend Bennington College in Vermont for a term. She returned to Hunter and received a BFA in painting in 1965. Kinne went back to Bennington for graduate work and received a MA in painting and sculpture.

Kinne settled into a loft on Chambers Street, NYC was making art and teaching at Hunter College. After two years she moved to a loft on Broadway and continued painting and teaching. When the economy hit the fan in 1975, she lost her job and eventually found work in central NY at the Gallery Association in Hamilton, NY making crates for traveling exhibitions. Kinne had purchased farmland in Columbus, NY in 1973 after her mother died and left her a little money, and put up a pole building in which she lived and made art. After a few years of life as a carpenter, Kinne got a teaching job at Colgate University in 1980.

After about 10 years living below the poverty line, things began to look up. At Colgate she met many interesting artists and became interested in using a computer for art making. Kinne was encouraged to create a Digital Studio class and had the opportunity to design the Digital Studio in the Art and Art History’s Little Hall that opened in January of 2001.

Kinne participated in many group exhibitions and collaborations around the county and in Paris. Her one-person show was Atomic Baby in Colgate University’s Clifford Gallery. She has also participated in many NYFA and NYSCA panels and was an Official Observer, at the Governor’s Conference on Art and Technology, March 1998. Kinne was a board member at Sculpture Space in Utica, NY for 12 years.

Kinne lived with her husband Robert Huot and 4 Samoyeds in the Town of Columbus in Chenango County, NY. After retiring from Colgate University in 2005, she moved into her new studio on her property and continued to make art.  In her spare time, She enjoyed doggie activities with her Samoyeds.
